In January, I traveled to Patagonia, Arizona, for an exciting shoot with Teravail to highlight their new Updraft gravel tire. Accompanied by an art director, a videographer, and myself, we set out to capture stills and a short video for the product release. Heading south, we aimed to dodge the winter chill and find inspiring terrain—and Patagonia delivered beyond our expectations!
Tucked in the mountains, Patagonia’s high desert landscape was a dream setting for our shoot. Gravel roads stretched through ranch country, framed by rocky hills, golden grasses, and sparse trees—a perfect showcase for the Updraft tire’s versatility. While January brought colder temperatures than we’d hoped, the crisp air added a rugged authenticity to our shots, complementing the adventurous vibe of the location.
Our crew worked in sync to bring the vision to life. The art director ensured every frame matched Teravail’s brand aesthetic, while the videographer captured dynamic footage of the tires in action. I focused on stills, highlighting the Updraft’s design against Patagonia’s striking terrain.
Our models, skilled gravel riders, were incredible to work with. Despite the chilly weather, they tackled the trails with ease, giving us authentic moments to capture. In one of my favorite BTS shots, you can see the team at work: the videographer setting up a shot, the art director reviewing the scene, and a rider rolling by on a gravel bike fitted with the Updraft tire. The dirt road, surrounded by the desert landscape, captures the essence of our Patagonia adventure.
The January cold was a hurdle, but it brought out the grit of our team and models. Bundled up and ready to ride, they embraced the conditions, and the resulting content has a raw, real-world feel that suits the Updraft tire’s purpose. The high desert light, even in winter, was stunning, casting warm tones over the landscape and making every shot pop.
Patagonia’s diverse gravel roads and mountainous desert terrain were ideal for showcasing the Updraft tire’s performance. From smooth, fast-rolling stretches to rocky climbs, the area put the tire to the test—and it excelled. The visuals we captured reflect the tire’s ability to handle varied conditions, all while showcasing the thrill of gravel riding in such a unique location.
